چکیده

Nowadays, it is an important trend in the system domain to use the software-based virtualization technology to build the execution environments (e.g., the Clouds). After introducing the virtualization layer, there exist two schedulers: One in the hypervisor and the other inside the Guest Operating System (GOS). To fully understand the virtualized system and identify the possible reasons for performance problems incurred by the virtualization technology, it is very important for the system administrators and engineers to know the scheduling behavior of the hypervisor, in addition to understanding the scheduler inside the GOS. In this paper, we develop a virtualization scheduling analyzer, called VSA, to analyze the trace data of the Xen virtual machine monitor. With VSA, one can easily obtain the scheduling data associated with virtual processors (i.e., VCPUs) and physical processors (i.e., PCPUs), and further conduct the scheduling analysis for a group of interacting VCPUs running in the same domain. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. An Efficient Virtual CPU Scheduling Algorithm for Xen Hypervisor in Virtualized Environment

The core of virtualization is hypervisor which directly determines the platform performance. How to allocate resource effectively becomes an important problem. Xen is an open source hypervisor and used as a virtual machine monitor. In this paper, we designed an efficient virtual CPU scheduling algorithm that combined Deadline-Monotonic Scheduling with Simple Earliest Deadline First (EDF) schedu...

RT-Xen: Towards Real-time Hierarchical Scheduling in Xen

Recent years have seen significant demand for supporting real-time systems in virtualized environments as system integration become an increasingly important challenge for complex real-time systems. This paper presents RT-Xen, the first hierarchical real-time scheduling framework for Xen, the most widely used open-source virtual machine monitor (VMM). RT-Xen bridges the gap between hierarchical...

Transparently bridging semantic gap in CPU management for virtualized environments

Consolidated environments are progressively accommodating diverse and unpredictable workloads in conjunctionwith virtual desktop infrastructure and cloud computing. Unpredictableworkloads, however, aggravate the semantic gap between the virtual machine monitor and guest operating systems, leading to inefficient resource management. In particular, CPU management for virtual machines has a critic...

Coexisting Scheduling Policies Boosting I/O Virtual Machines

Deploying multiple Virtual Machines (VMs) running various types of workloads on current many-core cloud computing infrastructures raises an important issue: The Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) has to efficiently multiplex VM accesses to the hardware. We argue that altering the scheduling concept can optimize the system’s overall performance. Currently, the Xen VMM achieves near native performance...
